The way to build the earthworm farm depends on the purpose of breeding and the conditions of each locality.

Before starting to build the earthworm farm, we must carefully research and make sure that the land we intend to farm on is not flooded during the rainy season.

Places that are flooded should not be used for farming because the worms will die or move to other places when they are flooded during the rainy season.

Earthworm farms can be designed under shady trees or under rubber trees, which is even better because it ensures proper humidity during the hot season.

You can use old pig or chicken cages that are no longer in use to make cinnamon worm breeding cages.

The way to make cages depends on the area of land we design the cage to be reasonable, but usually we build cages according to:

Area of 100m2:

Width: 5m – length: 25m – height: 0.4m (trench); 2.5m (cage)

We build two trenches each 2m wide and leave a 1m path in the middle. The height: we build about 4 bricks high.

Bottom: we line the bottom with about 4cm of plaster (mixed plaster). Roofing: The best way is to roof with leaves.

Roofing: depending on the actual conditions, however, coconut leaves are the best.

However, if we make cages under shady trees, we can roof with any material. Note:

  • When making a earthworm farm, we must ensure ventilation, light can penetrate, avoid making the cages too tightly closed, making the development of worms less effective.
  • For people living in low-lying areas and areas with slow draining soil, the floor should have a slope of 100 and a drainage path leading to the outside.
  • Do not make the floor too well by using ponds or concrete, or lining the floor with plastic sheets because it will prevent the floor from draining water.
  • After about 2 months, the biomass in the trench has reached 20cm, at this time, water should be irrigated every day because the surface of the trench is always dry, but the bottom is too wet, even stagnant water.
  • At this point, all the worm boxes will rot and the breeding will fail completely. Note: if using a new feed fermentation method, a thick layer of rock can be rolled, or an old pond can be used or a tarpaulin can be spread.

Area of 200 – 300m2:

Width: 10m – Length: 25m; 35m – Height: 0.4m (trench); 3.2m (cage)

The way to build a worm farm is similar to above, however, we divide it into 3 rows, 2 pathways 1mx2, 2 border rows each row 2m x 2 = 4m and the middle row is 3.4m.

Nowadays, building a traditional scale worm farm is quite expensive (due to the increasing cost of labor and materials) leading to very high investment costs.

We have also researched building a worm farm under rubber trees which has very high efficiency… SEE HERE
